Each year at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Saatchi & Saatchi feature up-and-coming directors in their New Directors’ Showcase. The NDS asks creative filmmakers around the world one question: “what does the future of storytelling look like?”
The Showcase has become renowned for pushing boundaries creatively and artistically, while introducing new and emerging technologies to the industry.
2016 marks a milestone in the history of the event as Saatchi & Saatchi plan to introduce a new creative talent to the film industry: Artificial Intelligence.
The cast of the film, which will debut on June 23, is composed entirely of machines, algorithms, and artificial intelligence assembled to parallel a true film crew. The film will be conceived, directed, and edited by machines. Among the technologies used are IBM’s Watson, Microsoft’s Ms_Rinna, Affectiva’s facial recognition software, EEG data, and a custom neural art program. Check out the trailer here.
Ruairi Glynn, Director of the Interactive Architecture Lab at Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, says of the project:“It’s interesting to explore the potential to build machines that simulate human intelligence but the really exciting future is developing new forms of creative intelligence quite unlike our own.” By introducing a machine-created film, Saatchi & Saatchi along with partners Team One and Zoic Labs are testing the boundaries of artificial intelligence.
Can a machine-made film make humans have an emotional response? In the words of Saatchi & Saatchi Global Chief Creative Officer Kate Stanners, the project aims to, “explore how Artificial Intelligence and machines can be used to enhance human creativity.”
Curator for the New Directors’ Showcase and Producer Andy Gulliman wanted to test, “if AI could really support our creative needs and deliver to our creative standards, we needed to know the true capabilities of the machines so [we] commissioned the experiment.” This project will draw attention to the advancements in AI as the general public becomes aware of the capabilities that artificial intelligence can deliver.
Keep an eye out for the final film and let’s all look forward to what an AI film crew can do.
