3 elements of Big Data.

“Big Data is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it.” More on www.cxoherald.com

Big Data is loosely defined in the industry. We defined Big Data using terms like Volume, Velocity and Variety. Big Data

  1. Real time feedback of a new product using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc.Yes, this would constitute Big Data because the data will have velocity.
  2. Weather data collected on a daily basis to predict future weather conditions. Yes, this would constitute Big Data because this data set has velocity, volume and variety.

I finally got some idea of what Big Data is. Essentially, it has 3 elements:

  • Velocity,
  • Volume, and
  • Variety

Velocity means that data is generated extremely fast and often continuously processed, like live streaming social media data. Volume simply means large amounts that cannot be processed fast enough by one’s existing computing system, like gigabytes and terabytes of data. And variety means different types of data, like a large dataset in an Excel sheet, text, videos from CCTV cameras, energy data and what not.

Basically, we call it BigData not only because the amount of data is large, but that it is acquired very fast, often continuously and the type of data varies a lot. And also, maybe, because of the huge impact it has on our world today.
